ish and Chips is the British number one National dish. Egon Ronay claimed "it was our most distinctive contribution to world cuisine".

Historically, the marriage of fish and chips dates back to 1860 in Northern England near one of the many fish docks. The original receipe was to fry the pair in beef dripping but it was in London's east end that they started frying in oil. The first fish and chip shop was near the famous Billingsgate wet fish market.

Cod and chips is the Londoners favourite, but that's not true for the whole country. Ask for fish and chips in Grimsby, and they will serve you haddock, however in Wales you most probably receive Plaice.

The latest award is the Journal Most Family Friendly Restaurant voted by the Archant group of newspaper readers.

Well done Alex and Agnes.
